Why Visit Kratie?

Kratie (pronounced “Kracheh”) sits on a wide bend of the Mekong, 348km northeast of Phnom Penh. It’s a proper Cambodian town — market activity, riverfront coffee stalls, sunset views over the water — with almost no tourist infrastructure and all the charm that implies.

Irrawaddy Dolphins at Kampi

Fifteen kilometres north of Kratie, the village of Kampi is the departure point for dolphin watching on the Mekong. The Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is one of the world’s most endangered river dolphin species — fewer than 90 individuals survive in this section of the Mekong.

Wooden boat tours run from Kampi for around $9 per person. The dolphins surface frequently and come close to boats. Seeing an animal this rare in the wild, in a river landscape this dramatic, is unforgettable.

Best time: Year-round, but easiest to spot in dry season (Nov–May) when water levels are lower.

Koh Trong Island

A river island opposite Kratie town, accessible by ferry ($1 return, 5 minutes). Virtually no traffic. Flat roads through farming villages, pomelo orchards, and stretches of riverbank where you can watch the Mekong at its widest. Rent a bicycle in Kratie (from $2/day) and cycle the island’s 8km perimeter.

Colonial Architecture

Kratie’s French colonial buildings are some of the best-preserved in Cambodia outside Battambang and Kampot. The old market area and riverfront streets have a faded grandeur that feels entirely authentic — no tourist-facing renovation, just the buildings as they are.

Sambor Prei Kuk (Day Trip)

100km south of Kratie (and 60km from Kampong Thom), Sambor Prei Kuk is a UNESCO World Heritage site — the largest pre-Angkorian temple complex in Southeast Asia, dating to the 7th–8th centuries. Often overlooked in favor of Angkor, the forest setting and genuine age of the ruins are extraordinary.
